Suomi, Kesä, Sateenkaari ja Juhannus: LGBT+ Hahmojen Tarinoita Suomalaisessa Scifi- ja Fantasiakirjallisuudessa

Finland, Summer, Rainbow and Midsummer: Stories of LGBT+ Characters in Finnish Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature

Happy Midsummer and Pride Month, all the colors of the rainbow and fantasy dreamers! Ah, Finnish summer - short but beautiful. The feeling of Midsummer in the air, nightless night and magic. The perfect time to pick up a book, open the cover and let it take you away.

Is there anything better than immersing yourself in Finnish literature, which is intertwined with summer night dreams, fantasy worlds and LGBT+ characters? These stories are populated by all kinds of characters who live, love and fight in these book worlds - and they do it as themselves.

Comics are one form of art where the stories of LGBT+ characters have found their home. Like the "Sarjakuvia Suomesta" anthology, where young artists like Tiitu Takalo and Hanneriina Moisseinen beautifully describe the experiences of LGBT+ characters in modern Finland. Their illustrations and stories, although set in a realistic setting, contain fantasy elements that take the reader with them to another world.

However, when we travel deeper into the depths of Finnish literature, we also find other characters and stories that celebrate the LGBT+ community in their own, unique way. Like, for example, Rosa Liksom's "Cabin No. 6", where the main character travels through Russia, thinking about his own sexual identity and the diversity of love.

In fantasy literature, Johanna Sinisalo is a master. His works, such as "You can't before sunset", bring out the contradiction between Finnish mythology and modern life. The main character, a young man named Mikael, wakes up to understand his own sexuality and gender identity as the story progresses.

In sci-fi literature, Emmi Itäranta brings LGBT+ themes to the fore in her work "The Tea Master's Book". In it, young Noria trains in her father's profession as a tea master in the Finland of the future, where water is an extremely valuable natural resource. Norian y

the friendship between Sanja and their joint fight for water brings depth to the story and touches the reader.

Since we are in Finland, we cannot forget the television. The series "Sorjonen" does a great job in bringing out LGBT+ characters and issues in the context of modern Finland. Although it is not traditional sci-fi or fantasy, the series' northern milieu and suspenseful plot provide its own kind of fantasy world in which the characters live and struggle.

In honor of Midsummer, I urge you all to read, watch and experience these stories. They offer us the opportunity to see Finland, and the world, with new eyes. Happy Pride month and an enjoyable Midsummer to everyone - and remember, the rainbow never ends, but continues to curve over Finnish lakes and forests!
